Time for fun.
If you’re like me a fan of conventions, you know how useful these gatherings could be: from meeting new and interesting people, to being face to face with your competitions.
Movies and tv show producers captured these moments of good and bad encounters on conventions.
Let’s see how Here’s what they did with it, enjoy !
Jerry Maguire.
Tom Cruise is interpreting a sports agent that wants to get the best deals (and commission) for his players.
Guess where he can meet the industry in one go? At the NFL draft trade show, where deals are made for players.
Scene to be found… (sorry guys)
Up in the Air
A corporate downsizing expert confronts his own life’s emptiness while traveling extensively.
And eventually ends up giving a memorable talk at a convention, picturing how these places could bring inspiration.
Cedar rapids
It is in this Iowa city where the comic-con happens every year (see the documentary about it in this post), that an insurance agent is sent to represent his company at a business conference where he is supposed to collect the “Two Diamond” award. Well, let’s say that the life of this model citizen will take a funny turn as he is about to join this insurance industry convention.
Here’s the trailer:
The Big short
One my favorite movies.
Here you will see how conventions are fantastic places to assess the “trend of a market”, even though in this scene at the American Securitization Forum at the Las Vegas Caesars Palace Baum puts a mess at a conference with his questions. He was not the speaker, but as an attendee he was a trend setter, for sure. Enjoy the scene.
Comic-Con: Episode IV – A Fan’s Hope
A 2012 documentary about the massive pop culture gathering that comic-con is. The documentary seize perfectly the like mindedness and shared interest that conventions attendees have in common.
Galaxy Quest
A Sci-fi comedy spoofing the convention/geekdom culture seen above. The fan convention eventually gets hit by a spaceship, making the audience event happier. Fan conventions atmosphere at its best, with a pinch of irony.
Mall Cop 2
In this 2015 comedy, a divorced, overprotective mall security guard attends a Las Vegas convention with his daughter and accidentally foils an art heist. Again, serendipity, you never know who or what you’re going to find at a convention !
Here’s the security convention scene:
The Manchurian Candidate
Now this movie has two versions, one from 1962, with Frank Sinatra, and one from 2004, with Denzel Washington.
Both display the importance of conventions, in this case, the. political convention that brings about to the public, the american preseidence candidate. The action leading up to the conventions in both versions of the film is taut and accurately shows the high-stakes nature of the events.
FYRE
Not a convention, a show or a fair, but, since it’s a gathering and one that wanted to be BIG, I added it to the list, just so you you can picture the FOMO effect these large gatherings have on our psyche.
The minions
Every activity in the world has its convention, except for what’s illegal, maybe. But in the fantastic world of animated movies, they are allowed. Don’t believe me? Check the Villain Conventions attended by our cute but annoying minions who will get a chance to meet their new boss and land their next job!
Trade Show Show
Last but not least the mockumentary TV series called Trade Show Show (2019) entirely focused on trade show dynamics.
Hillarious and unfortunately, kind of true.
Here’s a link to it, unfortunately I couldn’t find any extract for you… but here’s the website
Know about a famous convention movie scene I might be missing here, let me know in the comments.
